I kept a few families that my father had, but only one produced a Group winner and in the end I just had to move them on to operate a fairly flexible selling policy. She will also be selling three NH-bred foals at Tattersalls Fairyhouse for longstanding clients. Davison and Kitchin share the ethic and enthusiasm of the typical small breeder, but if they continue to bob so high at the top of the barrel they may just have to revise their modest opinion of themselves. Even now, he only just about gets the needle to go beyond 7st. He eats what he likes when he likes and he rides at whatever weight he likes. Perhaps that explains his constant demeanour, at ease with the world, comfortable in his own skin. A good lightweight apprentice who was getting plenty of rides and riding plenty of winners, he went to the US during the winter to hone his skills and he rode five winners under a claiming licence at Turfway Park.

He should have had 13 winners left claiming 3lb. He should have been able to start the season with his claim, he should have been able to attract the rides that a good claiming rider attracts, build up the momentum through the season, the relationships with horses, the relationships with trainers.

As it was, he kicked off the season from a standing start, with no competitive advantage over the top professionals — there was no reason why a trainer would choose the youngster over Michael Kinane or Pat Smullen. Predictably, he struggled. He did ride Tolpuddle to win the Irish Lincoln on the first day of the season, but he rode just 10 more winners for the remainder of the term. He developed a great relationship with Tommy and Fozzy Stack, and he started riding for David Wachman.

There was no falling out or anything, but Lordan has only ridden Sole Power once since. You know that there was no falling out because, when Slade Power — owned, like Sole Power, by David and Sabena Power and trained, like Sole Power, by Eddie Lynam — was getting going as a three-year-old sprinter, Lordan was the man who rode him.

Pat Smullen rode him to victory then, and Johnny Murtagh rode him when he won at Cork in April , but Lordan rode him at. Dundalk the following month, and he has ridden him in all 15 of his races since. So far, it has been some journey. I suppose when you are associated with a horse like that, people know you better. When there is a spare ride going, your name might be higher on the list than it would have been before.

In the July Cup, he gave him the same keep-it-simple ride that he had given him at Ascot. Same methodology, same outcome. And I was a little worried that there might not be that much pace on my side. As more new owners fetch their fillies home to breed from, and find places at stud for their colts, such as Derby and Great Warsaw Cup hero Patronus, who is by the popular Polish sire Ecosse, the future of Polish-breds looks hopeful.

The first Polish race was recorded in and the first regular organised racing began in , but the modern Polish Jockey Club was established as recently as The Club is a state legal entity with its own seat in Warsaw.
